Prologue

This twitterive is all about my love for the forest or woods; they mean the same thing to me. The one specific forest I am talking about is actually smack dab in the middle of a retirement community across the street from my Grandmother's house. I remember going for walks around the woods with my Grandma when I was younger. I still go there every chance I get. It's my safe/happy place; I go there to clear my mind. I also go there to get some fresh air and exercise. Sometimes going there results in bonding experiences when I bring others along with me. I recently decided that my little sisters would enjoy exploring the outdoors with my Grandma and I so, we took a walk. I didn't expect them to love it as much as I do but they did. Now every time we go to Grandma's they ask to go for a walk. These woods have been here for years; they are older than my Grandma and I would hate to see them disappear. Unfortunately urbanization is spreading through out wooded places like this and my fear is real. I hope to have some piece of these woods left for when I have children. I would like to show them the tell trees and the murky creek. With technology becoming such a huge part in our lives, I think a lot of people would benefit from taking a break and getting back in touch with nature.

Subject: Please don’t leave me.

Dearest Forest,
I know we have been friends for many years now. My Grandma and I still enjoy taking walks with you surrounding us with your beauty. Recently I have introduced my little sisters to all you have to offer. They are fascinated with your tall trees and swampy creek. Though they are not fond of the bugs; they do enjoy rolling around in your green blades of grass.  Every so often members of the retirement community greet us as they walk by. “You guys aren’t trees,” was uttered by a charming old man when he passed us as we lie on the ground. My sisters giggled when they discovered that there were little pieces of grass and leaves stuck to their clothes. Indeed we did look like trees. I hope you take that as a compliment.
I realize that urban sprawl is becoming a problem between my kind and yours. If I had it my way I would not allow them to chop you up into little pieces so that pyros can come and burn you. I feel like I am apart of you. You are my happy place and I refuse to let you go. Please, if you ever see contractors tell them to go back to where they came from. I would hate to see you end up like the woods down the street from me. They too were once a vast sea of trees, but now its an empty space of rotting stumps. Be strong!
Love,
Kirsten

Welcome to the Woods!
A nice place to take walks and be alone with your thoughts.
People won't bother you , they barely have teeth!
The only sounds you will hear are nature, wheel chairs and walkers. If your lucky, you'll get mistaken for a tree!

Come visit the woods and see for yourself!
Located directly in the retirement home community across from Grandma's house!

Don't delay the wood won't be around forever ya know!!!

As I grow so do these trees.

Where the leaves come to play
Young and old can be found
There’s a canoe to your right
And the unpaved path to your left
If you remembered to bring a pole
Fishing is straight ahead.

I’ve been here many times
And still come today
My grandmother brings me
And I bring my little sisters
We discover nature together

Things that are old to us
And are new to them
Lily pads in the water
And pine cones on the ground

Do you hear the campers shouting
Sam says hello to the older lady walking
Sabrina wants to sit with Grandma

We all find a place on the dock
To sit back and watch
Nature put on a show for us

Last thoughts about this special place:

I’ve been coming here for years and years. I started going with my mom and grandma. Next it was my grandma, little brother, dog and me.  Later it was just became my grandma and me. Recently it became a walk that was taken by my grandma, my little sisters and me.  This silly little wooded area in the retirement community may not seem like a big deal for outsiders, but I’ve been coming here my whole life. These woods are my escape and where I find sanity and leaves. I don’t know what would happen if the community ever decided to expand and knock down most of the trees. That would ruin the senses of privacy and freedom you have while in there. Urban sprawl can find some other place to develop and leave my woods and family out of this. I cherish the moments I have while in the woods and fear the growth of this community. But for now I’ll enjoy the time spent with the people I love in a place I love.
